3 Ways To Overcome Your Nerves When Presenting in Person or Online! + My Secret Weapon!
I have just recently had the opportunity to be one of the panelist for the Beautiful You Coaching Academy Inspiration Day in Melbourne and i'm still buzzing with excitement and awe of what has transpired on that day! It was such a great experience, and one I won't ever forget! I was there to share about my experience on PR and Media together with Katie Maynes who is in fact a PR specialist and coach! One of the questions that were asked on the panel was around how I keep the butterflies at bay when I get these PR or Media opportunities! Well let me say that as I was sitting there, I was SUPER NERVOUS! I had butterflies all over! I don't think Nervousness would ever go away, I feel that it's there as a good sign to remind us that we really care and that we're really passionate about what we are about to do. I've learned to switch my thinking from nervousness as a "warning sign" to a "guiding sign" that shows me that what i'm about to do is really important and something that I deeply care about. Nervousness will always be there, so it's all about learning to manage it and working with it as you go.
Here are my top 3 tips that I personally use to help me manage my nervousness when I am at the front presenting, running a workshop or doing radio interviews (which I shared at the Inspiration Day):
I REMEMBER MY 3P'S!
1) PEOPLE
Remember that the reason why we are up on stage, why we're presenting and why we are being interviewed is because we have a story to tell, we have lessons, experiences and insights to share and they are meant to bless others. We are there to speak life to the audience, build connection and inspire. When we remember this, the focus no longer is about us, and the attention now goes to HOW can I better share my message with confidence and clarity. It set's you up for service and the focus will be right where it should be which is serving people.
2) PREPARATION
Remember to prepare way before the event.
- Prepare for the topic. Do your research about the topic that will be discussed and practice how you will share your story. Once you have this prepared, you can be rest assured that you have all your bases covered! Write out all points to remember and read through them to memorise just incase these points up on on the interview - same goes for workshops and speaking engagements.
- Prepare your outfit in advance. If it's an in person presentation or speaking engagement, prepare your outfit way in advance, so you won't have to worry about this at the very last minute! Nothing worse than not knowing what to wear on the day!
- Prepare your trip. Familiarise yourself with the venue. Go early to make time for unexpected delays like traffic or other un-forseen events. This will give you time to relax and do some breathing exercises keeping the nerves at bay.
3) PRAYER (My Secret Weapon)
Remember to say a prayer of gratitude.
When we thank God for the opportunity that we get to share our message, it really lifts the weight of our shoulders... It is such a privilege and honour to be able to share your story and speak life to others. Come from a place of gratitude and realise that this moment of presenting is also an act of prayer. When we serve others it's a moment of prayer and gratitude toward our creator.
"Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus." Philippians 4:6-7
Prayer I would say would be my secret weapon.
If you ever feel nervous when you're about to speak, always remember these 3P's and know that you're story matters! What you're about to share to your audience might just be that one thing that they are needing to hear that very moment! Have the most fun and ENJOY!
